Earlier, we have reported that Honda Cars India has confirmed the development of an India-specific SUV. Now, the manufacturer has confirmed that this upcoming SUV will be in the markets in 2023, and will likely be launched in the first half as there is no new major model planned by Honda Cars India after the City Hybrid’s May launch.
Now, details about the India-specific SUV are still confidential, with the carmaker barely giving away any information. But we suspect the upcoming model will be a compact SUV taking on stalwarts like the Hyundai Creta/Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq/VW Taigun, and even the upcoming SUVs from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.
Plus, if the upcoming SUV is expected to be Creta rival, we can expect plenty of elements including its platform and chassis to be shared with the Honda City. So one can expect the standard 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines to make their presence felt. Plus, Honda could plonk in the new dual-motor hybrid powertrain from the City to take it on the likes of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki and Toyota SUVs, which are expected to get hybrid powertrains.
Features play a key role in the compact SUV segment and Honda should get bases covered with a touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, sunroof, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, a branded sound system, ventilated front seats, and a powered driver’s seat.
Considering that the City features ADAS, and even SUVs like the MG Astor and Mahindra XUV700, Honda could consider introducing it in its upcoming SUV. Plus, it will get the regular suite of safety kit like six airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold control, and tyre pressure monitoring system.
The upcoming Honda SUV, if it’s a Creta rival, is expected to be priced from around Rs 12 lakh. More details are expected to follow soon, so stay tuned.
